2.24.11 - Thrills, “Chills” and Turkey Bowling Generate Winterfest Success!

Officials Estimate More Than 40,000 Attended the Festival!

Where else could you see a newly-married couple, all decked-out in their wedding attire, go sledding…except in Buffalo?

That was just part of the fun and one of the surprises at the 2011 BUFFALO WINTERFEST & Powder Keg Festival, held on February 11th through the 13th in downtown Buffalo.

Jeff Adessa and Jamie Ottney were among thousands of others to “give it a go” on the snow-covered Skyway off-ramp at Seneca and Pearl Streets…though they did attract the most attention.

02.16.11 - Wing king lets winter fly ever higher
Donn Esmonde
The Buffalo News

You can’t put a price on it. This is what he did. He took winter—and no place is more known for winter than Buffalo—and he locked it down and put our stamp on it. We wrap our arms around snow and cold and ice. We don’t run and hide from it. We don’t cower from the cold. We celebrate it.

So we did, again, last weekend. We did only because the only guy who could salvage this thing stepped in and salvaged it. Travel more than 500 miles in any direction and Buffalo is known for two things: chicken wings. And winter.

And that makes what happened downtown last weekend so bowl-a-frozen-turkey appropriate. Drew Cerza nine years ago created the National Buffalo Wingfest, thus burning Buffalo’s international stamp on its homegrown creation. Now Cerza has embedded the seal of official approval on our other inescapable image: snow.

Winterfest turns downtown Buffalo into a frozen playground for fans of cold-weather activities

Downtown Buffalo turned into one huge workout facility Saturday -- whether your passion was playing pond hockey on 14 inches of ice, racing up 38 flights of stairs, competing in broomball or tossing a frozen turkey down a bowling alley.

Winterfest returned to downtown streets and the Erie Basin Marina amid ideal weather, at least for penguins, pond-hockey players and turkey bowlers.

Famous for launching the successful National Chicken Wing Festival in Buffalo, Drew Cerza will now try his hand at the Powder Keg Festival.
